What are spider veins?
Spider veins
Spider veins are small, thin veins visible just beneath the skin’s surface that often appear in a web-like pattern. Like varicose veins, they develop due to malfunctioning or incompetent valves within the veins. However, spider veins are smaller in size and located closer to the skin’s surface compared to varicose veins.
Causes
What causes spider veins?
.avif)
Spider veins develop when the tiny valves inside these small veins fail to work properly, causing blood to pool and veins to become visible. Factors that contribute to their formation include genetics, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or menopause), prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, and exposure to sunlight. Trauma or injuries to the skin can also play a role.
Frequency
How common are spider veins?
Spider veins affect a significant portion of the population, often appearing alongside varicose veins or as an isolated issue. Like varicose veins, they are very common but frequently underestimated as a medical concern. Many people experience spider veins, yet not everyone pursues treatment due to a lack of awareness about the underlying venous health issues.
Treatment
How are varicose veins treated?
The most widely used treatment for spider veins is sclerotherapy, which involves injecting a special solution directly into the affected veins, causing them to shrink and fade. However, spider veins often indicate a deeper venous problem related to larger veins with faulty valves. With Dr. Salah Kary, treatment starts by identifying and addressing these underlying issues using ultrasound imaging to detect any larger varicose veins. These deeper vein problems are treated first to prevent recurrence. Once the root cause is managed, sclerotherapy is then applied to effectively eliminate the visible spider veins.
