Edema & Swollen legs
Edema refers to swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body’s tissues, commonly seen in the legs. While edema can result from various medical conditions—such as heart, liver, or kidney disease—swelling in the legs may also be a sign of Chronic Vein Disease (CVD).
Causes
What causes edema and
swollen legs?

Leg swelling often occurs when the vein valves become “leaky” or fail to properly return blood from the legs back to the heart. This causes blood to pool in the lower extremities, leading to fluid buildup and swelling. Other contributing factors include prolonged standing or sitting, obesity, injury, and medical conditions affecting circulation or organ function. It’s important to note that swelling can have multiple causes, sometimes occurring simultaneously in one patient.
Frequency
How common is leg edema?
Leg edema is a widespread symptom affecting millions of people, especially those with underlying vein issues such as CVD. Because swelling can arise from a range of health problems, it’s often underdiagnosed or attributed solely to other causes without investigating venous health. Early recognition and treatment of vein-related edema can improve comfort and prevent complications.
Treatment
How is edema and swollen legs treated?
Dr. Salah Kary begins with a comprehensive ultrasound examination to identify any diseased veins contributing to the swelling. This detailed assessment helps determine if Chronic Vein Disease or other venous problems are causing the edema. If vein issues are detected, Dr. Kary will discuss appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition, aiming to reduce swelling and improve circulation. Treatment may include conservative measures, minimally invasive procedures, or other interventions based on your diagnosis.
