What are skin changes and ulcerations?
Skin Changes and Ulcerations
In advanced stages of Chronic Venous Disease (CVD), patients can experience changes to the skin on their lower legs, often around the ankles. These changes are called Stasis Dermatitis or Venous Eczema and can sometimes lead to painful ulcers or open sores.
Causes
What causes these skin changes?
.avif)
Skin changes in CVD happen due to poor circulation and inflammation caused by blood pooling in the lower legs. When vein valves don’t work properly, blood backs up, leading to swelling and irritation of the skin. This can cause the skin to become darker, red, thickened, rough, itchy, or painful. Over time, the unhealthy skin may develop infections or ulcers. Without treatment, these complications can worsen and, in severe cases, may even result in amputation.
Frequency
How common are skin changes and ulcers in CVD?
Skin changes and ulcerations are common among patients with advanced venous disease. Many people with untreated or long-standing CVD will develop some form of skin complication. Because these issues often develop gradually, they can go unnoticed until more serious problems arise. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent severe complications.
Treatment
How are skin changes and ulcers treated?
Dr. Salah Kary uses ultrasound and clinical evaluation to diagnose the underlying venous disease causing these skin problems. Treatment focuses on improving blood flow and reducing inflammation to promote healthier skin and prevent ulcers. While some skin improvements are possible, many changes may be permanent, making early intervention critical. Treatment may involve a combination of vein procedures, wound care, and lifestyle management to protect your legs and improve overall health.
